"Social bookmarking is a method for Internet users to organize, store, manage and search for bookmarks of resources online.
Descriptions may be added to these bookmarks so users may understand the content of the resource without first needing to download it for themselves.
In a social bookmarking system, users save links to web pages that they want to remember and/or share. These bookmarks are usually public, and can be saved privately, shared only with specified people or groups, shared only inside certain networks, or another combination of public and private domains.
Most social bookmark services encourage users to organize their bookmarks with informal tags instead of the traditional browser-based system of folders, although some services feature categories/folders or a combination of folders and tags. They also enable viewing bookmarks associated with a chosen tag, and include information about the number of users who have bookmarked them. Some social bookmarking services also draw inferences from the relationship of tags to create clusters of tags or bookmarks.
Many social bookmarking services provide web feeds for their lists of bookmarks, including lists organized by tags. This allows subscribers to become aware of new bookmarks as they are saved, shared, and tagged by other users.
Social Bookmarking: What is it? How do I use it? (In Plain English)
Why use Social Bookmarking? How can I use Social Bookmarking as a teacher or with my students?
Signing up for an account is really simple and free. You can post your bookmarks for others to see - share them - or you can keep them private, or share only which ever ones you choose to. You can add people to your 'list' and view what others are posting - this is handy for people who have similar interests. I use my Delicious or Diigo account for a variety of things because I follow other teachers who teach the same things as me, as well as use my account for projects I am working on for my classroom. I don't feel like you need to monitor (be in control yourself) of what your students use Delicious or Diigo for but give it to them as an option. It will be a tool that they can use for a variety of subjects, personal use, and even use it once they graduate.
Delicious is an online, sometimes collaborative place to store your "favorites". The greatest part of this site is that you can download buttons to go right on your tool bar of your browser as a 'quicklink' to save your favorites. Say you were reading something neat and you wanted to maybe finish it later, or refer to it again without writing down the address, what would you normally do? Click 'add to favorites' right? The problem with that is your 'favorites' are only saved locally on your computer, with access to them only being from one machine. This is a big pain when your students are trying to find resources for a project, or you are finding resources for your classroom for yourself or an activity, because at least in my school, the favorites are wiped out each day after you log out, and you can not always have access to the exact same computer every day. How do we fix this? Use an online, Social Bookmarking site such as Delicious so that you have access to your 'favorites' any place you have internet access - just by logging in to your account!
