"A mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged around a central key word or idea. Mind maps are used to generate, visualize, structure, and classify ideas, and as an aid to studying and organizing information, solving problems, making decisions, and writing.
The elements of a given mind map are arranged intuitively according to the importance of the concepts, and are classified into groupings, branches, or areas, with the goal of representing semantic or other connections between portions of information. Mind maps may also aid recall of existing memories.
The mind map can be contrasted with the similar idea of concept mapping. The former is based on radial hierarchies and tree structures denoting relationships with a central governing concept, whereas concept maps are based on connections between concepts in more diverse patterns."
Easy to use! I use it for myself for images of concept maps that we create in the classroom - I copy it into the program as we think of it out loud as a class. Students can use it to help them create information charts for oral presentations - the program has a notes option where they can expand what is on the flow-chart or mind-map so it is really handy for students to have all of their information in one place.
The nicest thing about the program is that you can export the file as an image so that you can use it anywhere, a word document to see the notes as well as the map, a powerpoint slide, or as a webpage! There is a variety of styles, colors, fonts and images to use so you can be as creative as you want. http://www.inspiration.com/inspiration8videos - some videos on how it works, as well as some classroom applications!

This site is a lot less flashy and bubbly than bubbl.us, but I like the clean look. I also appreciate that it was more intelligent about moving around nodes as I entered text. A bit more professional looking product - maybe better used in very senior student work - another option either way.
