The Chrysalids by John Wyndham - Science Fiction Novel
IDEAS
Using Google Docs, have students free-write a new ending to the story, or create one of the unfinished stories from the novel (ex: what happened to Aunt Harriet's body?)
Have students create a graphic novel based on the book using Comic Life
Have students create a soundtrack to the film and describe why they included each song, then have them create a CD cover for the soundtrack
Have students create a movie trailer for the book to film
Have students create biography cards of the main characters in the diary of Anne Frank, including Anne herself. Use Comic Life and dedicate a half page to each character, showing a picture, a description of the person and how they are 'related' to Anne. Create a bulletin board dedicated to the characters, survivors and non-survivors of her experience
Create a podcast (Audacity) of a radio commentary from a time and event in the book - have students incorporate sounds of gunfire or explosions in the background or layered in to create a real effect
Role-play interviews as Anne, Peter or another character, pretend they are being interviewed on a talk-show after the war ended and they are describing their experiences
Write a series of blog posts to Anne as if she were your friend and were still alive, make connections to her experiences and her story
Create a website dedicated in tribute to Anne Frank; her youth, culture, ideals, struggles, confinement, and influence
Using a blog, create a series of diary entries written in first person as one of the POW's in the camp who are trying to escape
Create a website giving information about WWI, German POW camps such as Stalag Luft III, the men in the POW camp from the novel, etc. You could use Eduglogster instead and create interactive posters about these items
Split up some of the information from above and have students create prezi or Powerpoints about each of the different things and present it to the class
Re-enact and film the escape scene from the novel (in part)
View films, documentaries and interviews from veterans such from The Memory Project (Historica Dominion Institute), ex: Flight Lieutenant Albert Wallace who was actually at Stalag Luft III!
Skype with a veteran of the war
View the film after reading the novel (it is old but it is still good)

Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck - Fiction Novella
IDEAS
Movie project – Choose a scene or several scenes to act out. You can also create a new scene that wasn’t in the novel – i.e. George and Lennie achievetheir dream, Curley meeting & marrying his wife, George and Lennie as young boys in Auburn, a trial scene etc. This project includes the movie, a storyboard and a script.
Research any topic within the novel that you’d like to know more about and present the information to the class in an appropriate format. Topics can include: The Dust Bowl, migrant workers, Steinbeck’s life, mental retardation, bunnies, how a Hollywood star is discovered, ranches, the effects of loneliness, the American Dream etc. Formats include: power point presentations, posters, brochures, newspapers, etc. This project includes: all of your research(everything you looked up or printed out to get your facts), a bibliography, and the visual aid - USE PREZI!!!
Poetry Book – USE COMIC LIFE! Find and write poems about the main themes found in the novel: Friendship, Loneliness, Hopes and Dreams and Death. You will have a total of 8 poems (25-30 line minimum), 4 by published poets and 4 written by you, that reflect each of the themes. This project includes: 8 poems typed or neatly hand written, an illustrated cover, a table of contents, and a bibliography for the published poems. For your presentation, you will read any 3 of the poems to the class.
Collage Project – Clip pictures and words from magazines and newspapers to create a multi-layered collage on a “x” piece of poster board. The collage should include the elements of the novel including: setting, characters, conflicts, themes etc. It should give an overall view of the entire novel with no blank spots on the poster board. - USE EDUGLOGSTER!
Here is an example of a glog about The American Dream:
"I made this powerpoint to use at the end of Of Mice and Men as a summary of the main characters, themes, motifs, and symbols. I then had my students create a final project where they looked at one of the themes, motifs, or symbols as it was in the novella, and then compared or contrast it to modern society." http://horizoncap.pbworks.com/w/page/26072328/ELA%2010%20Lesson%202%20-%20Lindsay
